Do You Do One Space or Two After the Period?

by pfeifer on January 19, 2011

An issue that generates a surprising amount of argument is whether one should hit the space bar once or twice after a period. People pay no attention to some of the most important issues of our time, but disagree with how they think a document should be typed and they will be ready to take off your head.

Since this trivial issue is the subject of so much heated debate, I wrote an article about it for the About.com Law Practice Management site. Since that site is geared towards lawyers, I wrote about the issue from the perspective of legal documents. However, lawyers are not the only ones fighting about proper spacing, and I included the opinions of several non-lawyers in the article.  To see the article, read Should You Put One Space or Two Spaces after the Period in Legal Documents on the About.com Law Practice Management site.

What are your thoughts on this issue, not just in the context of legal documents but for all kinds of writing? Are you a one-spacer or a two-spacer? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
